Akinori Yamanaka studied B.Eng. (2005) and M.Eng. (2006) in mechanical engineering and did PhD (2008) under the supervision of Prof. Yoshihiro Tomita in the field of computational solid mechanics, with particular emphasis on the phase-field modelling of phase transformation in steels, from Kobe University (Japan). During the PhD, he was awarded a very competitive grant from the Japan Society for Promotion of Science. After his PhD, he was appointed as an assistant professor in the Department of Mechano-Aerospace Engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology. In 2012, he joined the Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology as an associate professor. In 2015, he was a visiting scholar at Northwestern University (host: Prof. P. W. Voorhees). From 2017 to 2019, he was a visiting researcher at the National Institute of Materials Science (Tsukuba, Japan). In April 2021, he was promoted to a full professor and engaged in research and education in the Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology.
He has received several awards from national and international organizations including the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) Young Engineers Award (2009), JSME Medal for Outstanding Paper (2010), ACM Gordon Bell Prize (2011), Japan Association for Computational Mechanics (JACM) Award for Young Investigators in Computational Mechanics (2019), Japan Society for Technology of Plasticity (JSTP) Best Paper Award (2021), JSTP Medal for Scientific/Technological Achievement (2021), JSME Computational Mechanics Achievement Award (2023) and the very prestigious “Young Scientists' Award”, commended for Science and Technology by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (2018).
