　Decoding of the human genome has been accomplished and biotechnology is positioned as one of the basic fields for our next generation by most of the developed countries in the world such as Japan and the United States. Department of Biotechnology and Life Science, Faculty of Engineering in Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology has been established as the first university department of biotechnology. Since then, we have created our own curriculums to nurture professionals in the field of biotechnology ahead of other universities in the nation and sent out many excellent human resources to both domestic and international societies.
Biotechnology is currently a cutting-edge field of research and continues to create new technological areas by assimilating with other research fields with increasing speed to expand. In this department, we have established unique research areas such as marine biotechnology, plant biotechnology, bioelectronics, nanobiotechnology, clone animal creation, ionic liquids and biomaterials and achieved internationally outstanding research. In addition, these achievements have come under the spotlight of industrial areas because one of the features of our department is the research achievement specialized for industrial application. We are always paying our attention to create the new trend of research by assimilating the technologies and knowledge in different research fields from biotechnology. We also established the research section of Biotechnology and Life Science in our graduate school.
