To realize a safe, comfortable, and sustainable transportation society, the development of safety technologies to prevent automobile traffic accidents, as well as research and development addressing global warming and energy issues, is essential. Particularly in the realm of safety technologies, there is a recognized need to shift the focus of research from collision safety during accidents to preventive safety measures aimed at averting accidents before they occur.

Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT) has established a strong track record in constructing and analyzing a near-miss database using video-recording dashcams, as well as conducting research on motion control of vehicles through vehicle dynamics, control engineering, machine learning, and data science. The university has also been successful in securing public funding for preventive safety initiatives and has a wealth of experience in large-scale collaborative research with private enterprises, making it a pivotal center for preventive safety research in Japan.

With the establishment of this center, TUAT will further strengthen the research consortium of industry, government, and academia focused on smart mobility.
